A faculty of Philosophy that seeks to provide a profound development of the intellect in the area of cultural philosophy must equip itself with the necessary means to promote and shape the capacity and competence of judgment in a critical and lucid manner. It is in the undertaking of this responsibility that the journal Comprendre (“Understanding”) was born.
Of course, it would be a delusion to favour personal comprehension to the detriment of the universality of the operations of lucidity unique to the human race. Equally, it would be vain to pretend to make out of a journal whose name means “understanding” something other than a further instrument in the service of philosophical research. Every act of comprehension corresponds to a basic relation of our way of being in a given situation within a particular tradition. Yet at the same time, it does not correspond to the entirety of our relation to the world. In the same way, Comprendre will endeavour to remain conscious of the valuable thought that has preceded us, of our own modest efforts, and of the magnitude of the principle streams of thought worldwide that cultivate philosophy.
A journal of philosophy must transform itself into a tool that favours the publication of the activity of philosophical thought, and which seeks knowledge, to the extent that something is knowable in and of itself. Comprendre aims to offer an open space that allows us to subject this presentation of ideas to the critique of human reason, that which constitutes the index of the collective measure of our intellectual wellbeing. This is a profoundly spirited activity that strives to question and to provide answers with dignity and valour in order to respond to what truly is, without allowing oneself to be carried away by the usual, fleeting comings and goings of human opinions.
